Susquehanna River Rock Art
More than 1,000 carved images (petroglyphs) of birds, animals, humans, the tracks they make, and more abstract designs have been documented on the rocks here. The sites on the Susquehanna are perhaps the largest concentration of rock art in the Northeast United States.
The Thunderbird
A legendary creature of North American Indigenous peoples, the Thunderbird is considered a supernatural being emulating power, strength, and protection. They are viewed as rulers of the upper world and ancestors of humanity. Rituals often honored them through offerings or feasts to ensure storms brought renewal rather than destruction.

According to Algonquian culture, the Thunderbird is said to create thunder by flapping massive wings and hurl lightning from their eyes or beak to battle underworld creatures like the Great Horned Serpent or underwater panther. This eternal conflict symbolizes the balance between sky and water realms, with Thunderbirds safeguarding humans from chaotic underwater beasts.
